Radio Frequency Microneedling & the Fear Around Fat Loss: Let’s Set the Record Straight
Recently, there’s been a lot of noise online surrounding RF microneedling and “unintended fat loss.” We’ve had many clients understandably concerned after hearing horror stories circulating on social media, so let’s clear up the confusion with facts.
First and foremost: when we perform RF microneedling on the face for pore reduction, scarring, fine lines, and overall skin rejuvenation, we are never targeting the subcutaneous fat layer. Our goal is collagen stimulation NOT fat destruction.
The difference lies in depth and settings. To intentionally break down fat using RF microneedling, practitioners must work much deeper, typically 3–4mm or more, especially on the body. At these depths, the energy reaches the subcutis, where fat cells live. This is a completely different treatment protocol, designed specifically for body contouring or fat reduction.
Facial RF microneedling treatments, on the other hand, are performed at much shallower depths generally between 1–2mm. This targets the dermis, where collagen and elastin are produced, while safely avoiding the fat layer altogether.
So where do the horror stories come from? Unfortunately, they are almost always the result of incorrect settings, excessive depth, or poor practitioner training. RF microneedling is a powerful and effective technology, but like any advanced treatment, it must be used correctly and conservatively.
When performed by experienced professionals who understand facial anatomy, RF microneedling is safe, controlled, and highly effective. Education, precision, and expertise make all the difference.
