What is Glycation and why do some of us get it as we age?

What is it?

Glycation is a process that occurs in the skin, caused by excess glucose in skin fibres… Yes it is true, sugar does affect our skin! So pop down that donut and read on!

HOW DOES GLYCATION OCCUR?

Glycation occurs when an excess of glucose is combined with the collagen and elastin fibres. This sets off a chemical reaction that forms destructive molecules called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs). Glucose overlaps around the collagen and elastin fibres and with time they become rigid and can even break and lose their activity. With age, the AGE molecules accumulate in the dermis and end up destroying the support cushion of the skin formed by elastin and collagen.

Each of these may be signs of glycation:

  • Loss of elasticity and suppleness (skin may appear hard and shiny)
  • Fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Sudden hormonal acne.
  • Sagging skin along the jawline or jowl area.
  • Dryness, flakiness, dehydration, and inflammation.

At what age does glycation start?

This process begins when we are about 20 and gradually intensifies. So, while it is a natural process, diets that are high in sugar accelerate glycation, causing more AGEs to form in the skin. This is why our face starts to “fall” and needs extra help to continue looking youthful.

What does glycation look like on the skin?

Glycated skin with damaged collagen and elastin leads to a rough, callus-like texture on the skin. It often looks like there is a layer of orange peel on the epidermis.

HOW TO PREVENT GLYCATION?

Glycation can’t be completely stopped however it can be slowed through positive dietary choices and good skincare products.

DIET:

  • Avoid white sugar and High-fructose corn syrup
  • Instead of white bread and white rice, choose carbs such as wholegrain bread and brown rice (these produce less glucose and release it more slowly.)
  • Take carnosine supplements – an amino acid that has been shown to protect against AGE buildup.
  • Green tea stimulates collagen synthesis and has been proven to interfere with the glycation process.
  • White mulberries and their leaves are known to help to slow down the breakdown of sugars, allowing for a lower absorption into the blood.
